The terms ‘therapy’ and ‘counselling’ are often used interchangeably, but this also depends on the countries that regulate therapy and counselling guidelines. For example, in Malaysia, both terms refer to the same subject and meaning.
Both involve talk therapy, usually delivered by accredited and licensed counsellors or clinical psychologists. These clinicians may refer to themselves as counsellors, psychologists, therapists, or psychotherapists.
The process of talk therapy involves the therapist and the client in a session or consultation. When clients face problems, emotional challenges, or goals that they want to resolve and achieve, therapy can be useful and effected for the long-term. With professional therapy or counselling, clients can seek professional, unbiased, non-judgmental assistance. Therapy helps to resolve challenges, concerns, reduce negative symptoms, and improve mental health.
Therapists are trained in dealing with a range of mental wellbeing and mental health concerns. The sessions are usually delivered between one client and one therapist in a physical room or virtual video platform, lasting for about 45 to 60 minutes. Other times, the therapist may see more than one individual at a time, such as couples in romantic relationships or marriages, family members, and friends.
